Platform Director at Owlet Baby Care
Lehi, UT, US

Owlet is growing and we’re looking for industry leaders to support this growth. As the Director of Platform Engineering, you will be at the helm of several teams that define and implement the architecture and foundation of our data integration platform. 

In this role your primary responsibility will be to drive the vision, strategy, roadmap, implementation, and delivery of Owlet’s data integration core and platform. You’ll prosper at Owlet if you relish chasing impact, clarifying ambiguous terms, and fostering scalability, reliability and innovation. 


As a Director of Platform Engineering at Owlet, you will: 

  • Manage the platform and devops engineers
    • Conduct regular 1-1s with direct reports
    • Manage all platform related costs and work with strategic vendors:
      • Review and negotiate contracts
      • Negotiate and monitor vendor SLAs
      • Manage overall budget and external costs
    • Grow and mentor a talented a talented team of engineers:
      • Career and learning opportunities
      • Weekly 1-1s and yearly reviews
      • Skills development
      • Manage time off across the team
      • Work with recruiting manager on hiring needs
  • Create roadmaps and yearly / quarterly strategic plans
    • Own and drive the strategy and roadmap for Owlet’s data integration core and platform architecture 
    • Create quarterly OKRs and report progress to the VP of Engineering.
    • Deliver tangible and practical new platform features that are supporting our data integration connectors 
    • Create and deliver on best practices for security, development, system operations and development
  • Collaborate with the VP of Engineering, and other engineering directors / peers to jointly deliver innovative core, platform features 
  • Collaborate with our security team to foster policies that ensure our systems are secure and satisfy regulations
  • Ensure reliable and scalable service operations through refined monitoring and release practices


What you bring to the table:

  • Extensive experience in managing software engineering teams that have delivered platform products
  • You have been part of an engineering leadership team before and have held high level responsibilities
  • Unique skill set to be a great manager and operator while also being a great platform architecture leader
  • Strong propensity to drive tangible and practical platforms architectures
  • You have previously crafted platform visions, roadmaps and strategies and delivered them
  • Well versed in moderating healthy discussions that reveal different opinions between your team members, the Engineering team and other managers and senior engineering team members to drive not only the best decisions but do so in a timely fashion
  • Designed and implemented data pipelines before
  • Deep technical expertise in public cloud service provider platforms such as GCP or AWS
  • Experience with CI/CD platforms such as Jenkins, CircleCI, and Travis CI.
  • 4+ years managing and scaling teams
  • High proficiency in security best practices
  • Experience with service oriented architecture, REST based services and orchestration of APIs for web and mobile applications.
  • Strong understanding of data storage solutions and optimizations
  • Deep experience with common infrastructure paradigms such as containerization, DNS services, load balancing, and auto scaling
  • Strong capabilities in evaluating software technologies across the entire stack
  • You know how to influence teams and team members that are not reporting to you
