Cloud Data Engineer II at Owlet Baby Care

Data analytics is a crucial area of growth at Owlet, and your talents are needed to help internal business partners make data-driven decisions and help build a platform that allows greater accessibility to data. 


The Cloud Data Engineer is a combination of Data Pipeline Builder, Semantic Layer Builder, and Analytic Platform Engineer and occasionally dashboard creation. As Owlet grows, you will focus more on building the pipelines that feed our central data store. Initially, you will work closely with the Cloud Data Architect and the business to determine which data elements should be centralized into the cloud data repository while the BI Engineers build out the user interfaces.

  • Build and maintain DAG and DAG-like python workflows
  • Write SQL to SQL transformations with dbt or similar tool
  • Build, rebuild and performance tune data transformation tasks within the central data store
  • Parse unstructured data into curated datasets
  • Co-design and implement a semantic layer so business units can self-service where possible
  • Develop an auditable deploy process and version control data pipes
  • Build repeatable processes in anticipation of the expansion of the Enterprise Analytics team 
  • Build continuous integration / continuous deploy (CI/CD) pipelines for dashboards and datasets for the organization ensuring change management and version control for data assets
  • Build and maintain the pipelines data glossary
  • Independently assess business data maturity and advise stakeholders on areas of improvement



You should be prepared to demonstrate proficiency using cloud data pipeline tools. You will use that knowledge combined with your excellent communication ability to bridge business concepts and needs to datastores they can use to answer their questions. Owlet currently uses several well-known tools and may implement new technologies in the future to allow users to interact with their data. You will need to learn and be successful with whichever tools the organization uses and improve your knowledge of each tool through self-directed training. To accommodate software development life cycle, (SDLC) familiarity with git or other version control systems is desirable. Familiarity with programming deployments to analytics tools using APIs is also highly desirable. Bachelors or masters of science in related fields are also desirable. 


You will be prepared to demonstrate proficiency in all of the following:

  • SQL (MySQL, TSQL, Oracle, Postgres)
  • Python
  • DAG driven orchestration tools like Airflow, Prefect.io and the like
  • Parsing File Formats: XML, JSON, Parquet, csv etc 
  • GIT (Github, Gitlab, ADO)
  • NoSQL data stores
  • At least one BI Tool  (Tableau, PowerBI, Looker, Qlik, Kibana, Sisense, Thoughtspot, SSRS)


Preference will be given to you if you can demonstrate proficiency in:
